After eighteen hours, the man with the camera

sliced the egg open and spilled the ostrich out.

It has to struggle to build strength, he said, but

struggling made it weak. We waited for the big

shudder to piano our rooftops, imagined drinking

the blistering fat of the yolk, fluttering to the incubator

like so many lipsticked moths to warm its ward

with our collective breath. Desperation to be undone

undid us. There is no impossible, only the unexplained.

The yolk, frankly, bored us. The ostrich was fine.

We could not rescue anything that was not already

in danger. The bird barked and barked, then began

to scream. Of course we followed its example.
